Hair braiding license…what are my options afterwards as far as a “business”?

Question by **ME**: Hair braiding license…what are my options afterwards as far as a “business”?
For many years(my teenage years) I earned extra monies by braiding hair etc. Now, being an adult I would like to pick up the extra earnings and maybe braid hair on a part time basis. My plan is to gain the proper licensing and then braid/style hair from my home.

My confusion is whether I can consider this a “business”(for tax/yearly income purposes) since I will be braiding hair from within my home? My home is not owned. We rent an apartment.

So, my question is….

If I get my cosmetology license, can I start/run an official/lawful BUSINESS from out of my rental apartment?

It will only be on a part time basis as I only want to do this for a small extra income. Probably 1 client a day or so.

Thanks in advance for any info;-)

Whether or not you can run a business out of your apartment will be up to your apartment manager / owner and the city in which you reside.

The city will require you to have a business license. One of the steps that they usually have you do is an inspection of your business. The rules for a home business are different, but they still may want to know about parking, signage, wheelchair access, etc. For many home businesses, this isn’t a problem, but since you plan to have your clients come to your home, it may be a bigger issues.

One of the hurdles for a business license, is that the property owner sign off on it. In this case, you will need the approval of the apartment owner or manager.

Also, your state licensing board may have standards about what your work space looks like. They may require you to have certain sanitizing equipment, a certain amount of space for the number of clients you expect to have, etc. You can find out more from your state board of cosmetology.

Cosmetology is usually highly regulated, so you should start with your state board to find out if they even allow home-based facilities.

You might look in to renting space a a local salon. If all you want to do it braid hair, you would probably want to not look at chain or franchise salons that may expect you to cut hair or do other things, but a private salon may let you do whatever you want and just expect you to pay rent.

I hope that helps a little bit. Good luck to you.
